The World Cup will be played on Christmas Day in Germany, but it will be the first time since 1996 that the country has hosted the event in the same place for more than 100 years.
Brazil has hosted every major sporting event since 1896 and Brazil’s president Dilma Rousseff said it was a historic moment.
“We are celebrating the birth of the world, it is a very important day for Brazil,” she said.
“It’s a special day for us.
It’s a moment that will be remembered in the history books for a long time.”
The Confederations Cup is a joint event between the host nation and a third country, with a prize fund worth $50 million.
The first-ever tournament was played in 1887 in England and ended in a tie between the US and Canada.
